A Sloppy Joe is drippy, messy, and mighty flavorful. There is nothing complicated about the Sloppy Joe and can be made so many different ways. The Sloppy Joe History, however is a bit more complex. Check out this link. Did you remember the commercial ? I did.
The basis of a good Sloppy Joe is good ketchup. I prefer to use a variety of peppers not just one. I also like to use both ground beef and spicy hot Italian sausage without the casing.
If you want some of this Sloppy Joe get the pot on the stove and lets get cooking.
Here We Go.
Start by browning the ground beef and Italian sausage in a large pot over medium-high heat. Drain off the fat.
Add the green, red and orange peppers. Toss in your onions.
Stir, and then add 1 cup water, the ketchup and garlic.
Stir it around to combine, and then add the brown sugar, chile powder, dry mustard, red pepper flakes, and hot sauce, Worcestershire, salt and pepper to taste. Pour in your half cup of red wine ( drink some of the red wine while you cook…why not ).
Stir to combine, and then cover and simmer over medium-low heat, about 20 minutes.
To server , spread the rolls with butter and brown them on a griddle or in a skillet. Spoon a good amount of the meat mixture onto the bottom roll and then top with the other half. If your plate does not look Drippy and Messy… than you have not put enough meet on the bun. Serve with chips, salad. Enjoy it in a bowl like my husband John does.
