Allan Benton’s Bacon—Contents—Caution—Flavorful

If you need a hostess gift, I was completely surprised at what arrived at my door.  After my sister Mary Kay who lives in Nashville spent the week with me, she sent me Allan Benton’s bacon.  
In this day and age it may seem strange to see a piece of meat arrive on your doorstep without refrigeration or ice.  Well, this meat definitely isn’t from this day and age.
Curing is a traditional way to preserve meat.  This process pre-dates to the invention of refrigeration by several thousand years.  Some think it may even pre-date fire roasting meat.  It is a very, very safe process.  It produces intensely flavored meat that lasts a long time. 
So fun this morning I cooked up the bacon for my sister Sheila and my niece who are in town from Cincinnati, WE LOVED IT!!  Don’t just take our word for it check out this link on Gourmet Magazine.

The bacon came with a magazine called Camp Bacon filled with information all about bacon and events.  There was a list of 27 ways to prove that everything tastes better with bacon but I will give you my top 5!
1. Potato and Bacon Retes at the Bakehouse
2. Fired egg and bacon sandwich
3. Shrimp and Grits and Bacon
4. Pimento Cheese and Arkansas Peppered Bacon Burger (Don’t forget earlier I posted a fabulous pimento cheese recipe, check it out!!)
5. Cook your grilled cheese in back fat
I couldn’t stop myself so one more….
